Cornet into final as Muguruza retires hurt

6 January 2017, by brisbaneinternational.com.au

Alize Cornet is through to her biggest final in nearly three years after second seed Garbine Muguruza retired mid-match at the Brisbane International on Friday afternoon.

The French world No.41 was leading 4-1 in the first set when the Spaniard called for the trainer before calling it quits with a right thigh injury.

Muguruza had battled for more than six hours to get past Sam Stosur and Daria Kasatkina before a tight two-set win over fifth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova.

It is the first time Cornet has appeared in a WTA Premier Level final since Dubai in 2014. She awaits the winner of Friday night’s second semifinal between third seed Karolina Pliskova and sixth seed Elina Svitolina.
