Former grand slam champion Mal Anderson will be named an Icon of Queensland Tennis at a special presentation on Pat Rafter Arena on Wednesday night.

The 1957 US Open champion and three-time grand slam doubles champion reached a career-high ranking of world No.2, and is one of the nation’s most celebrated Davis Cup players with two title wins – in 1957 and 1973 – to his name.

In addition to his four career singles titles Anderson has been awarded the sport’s highest honours – in 2000 he was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame, in 2001 he was inducted into the Australian Tennis Hall of Fame and in 2009 he joined the Queensland Sport Hall of Fame.

Anderson joins Ashley Cooper, Roy Emerson and Rod Laver on the elite Icons of Queensland Tennis honour roll.

This week, seven Queensland players featured in Brisbane International main draw singles action, the highest number in tournament history and a sure sign the sport is alive and well in the Sunshine State.

The Icons of Queensland Tennis presentation will be held immediately prior to the first night match on Pat Rafter Arena. A commemorative bust will be unveiled on court and later permanently displayed at the Queensland Tennis Centre.
