Brisbane International 2014 wildcard recipient and rising Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has withdrawn from the event with injury.

The 18-year-old was set to play compatriot Matthew Ebden on Tuesday but an injured right shoulder has put an end to the teenager’s tournament.

“I’m heartbroken to say I won’t be able to compete but unfortunately I’ve run of time to overcome the issue with my right shoulder,” said Kyrgios.

“I feel good that the long-term prognosis is really positive, this is just going to be a minor setback. I’m disappointed I won’t be on the court tomorrow against Matt, I was really looking forward to it and I look forward to being back out on court in Brisbane in 2015.”

The injury first came to light on Boxing Day as Kyrgios prepared for the Brisbane International.

“Nick’s just come off a seven-week training block and was primed and ready to go for the tournament,” explained Simon Rea, Kyrgios’s coach.

“The soreness has since persisted and we’ve been working with the medical team to get Nick fit to compete, but tonight was the last roll of the dice and unfortunately we’ve run out of time to get on court tomorrow.”

Fortunately the young Australian Open junior champion’s summer isn’t over, he’ll travel to Sydney where he hopes to be fit.

“The priority over the next month is to get fit for the Australian Open, but the even bigger priority is Nick’s wellbeing. The medical team is confident the injury will settle so playing in Sydney isn’t out of the question. We’re certainly hopeful he can get to Sydney and get some matches in before the Australian Open next month,” said Rea.

A lucky loser will take Kyrgios’ place in the draw.
