Williams makes short work of countrywoman

Third seed Serena Williams has dismissed fellow American Varvara Lepchenko in the first round of the Brisbane International with a 6-2, 6-1 victory.

Since June, Williams has reached new heights in domination by winning 32 of her 33 singles matches, which has also seen her claim Wimbledon and the US Open.

The 31-year-old highlighted her ruthless streak on Day 1 in Brisbane, wiping Lepchenko off Pat Rafter Arena in 59 minutes.

In her first match since toe surgery, Williams presented Lepchenko with five break points in the opening game but saved them all before completely outclassing the world No.21.

Williams, who now has a 32-1 singles record since June, will play either Frenchwomen Alize Cornet or West Australian qualifier Bojana Bobusic in the second round.
