Millman seizes hometown opportunity

31 December 2012, by Brisbane International Tennis

UPDATE 3.09pm: John Millman has won his way through qualifying to reach the Brisbane International main draw for the third time.

Millman, ranked 199th, upset American leftie Donald Young in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 and will await news of who he has drawn to meet in the first round.

The Brisbane-based 23-year-old will join fellow Australian men Lleyton Hewitt, Marinko Matosevic, Matthew Ebden and Ben Mitchell in the main draw.

Playing on Show Court 10, Millman thanked the crowd for their vocal support.

“They crammed in onto the hill – it’s a massive advantage. For 50weeks of the year you don’t have that, so you’ve got to make the most of it while you’re here,” he said.

“I’m lucky to have such a good support base in Brisbane, so I’m really happy to be playing here.”

Millman lost to defending champion at the time, Radek Stepanek, as a wildcard in Round 1 three years ago and to compatriot Matt Ebden, again as a wildcard in 2011. He lost to Colombian Santiago Giraldo first round last year.

This marks the second time in a row he has won through qualifying to reach the main draw at his home tournament.

In other results, America’s Denis Kudla downed Russian Igor Kunitsyn 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, while compatriate and world No.69 Ryan Harrison defeted Ivo Minar 6-4, 6-1.

Canandian Jesse Levine was the last player to make it through to the main draw thanks to a 7-6(4), 6-3 victory over American Steve Johnson.
