Australian Bojana Bobusic has picked up where she left off after winning December’s Australian Open Play-off, with a three-set victory over compatriot Arina Rodionova in first round women’s singles qualifying at the Brisbane International on Thursday.
In the battle of the Aussie wildcards, Bobusic recovered from a set down to beat Rodionova – the younger sister of WTA player Anastasia – 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Another local wildcard, Viktorija Rajicic, was not so fortunate, falling 6-4, 6-1 to Puerta Rico’s Monica Puig.
There were wins for Australian-born Brit Johanna Konta, who beat Spain’s Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor 6-3, 6-1; Czech Kristyna Pliskova, who downed Teliana Pereira of Brazil 7-6, 6-3 and Italian Karin Knapp over Russian Alexandra Panova 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Top-seeded qualifier Vania King, of the United States had a tough three-set win over Argentina’s Paula Ormaechea while Kazakhstan’s Ksenia Pervak beat American Alexa Glatch in two.
