Radek Stepanek is backing himself ahead of a first-round clash with Australian No.2 Matthew Ebden.
The Czech sixth seed has a 12-2 record in Brisbane having captured the 2009 title and been a finalist and semifinalist in 2010 and 2011 respectively.
“[The] history I have here always gives me a kick of confidence, I feel great here and hope I can keep it up for another year,” he said.
The world number 28 isn’t fazed by a career-first meeting with Ebden who gained entry to the main draw due to withdrawals by James Blake, Kevin Anderson and Donald Young.
“I will definitely fight again for my spot, I’m very excited for my first match, I always love to play in Brisbane and it will not change even if I’m playing an Aussie guy in the first round,” said the 33-year-old.
Western Australia’s Ebden – currently ranked 86 – began his breakthrough 2011 season here in Brisbane where he fell to Soderling in the quarterfinals as a qualifier.
Previously a rarity on the ATP Tour, the 24-year-old won through qualifying rounds in no less than five events, earning the right to face off against top players including Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and David Ferrer.
Stepanek said he was aware of his slated opponent’s ability to change the rhythm of the game and charge the net, having watched him play in a handful of tournaments this year, but believes he is in poll position to dictate the direction of the match.
“It always depends on what I’m going to do on the court and what I leave my opponent to do.”
