Video: Brisbane International 2012 launch
Today’s official launch of Brisbane International 2012 unveiled an exciting array of new players and plans for next year’s event.
“With Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Kim Clijsters, Sam Stosur, Ana Ivanovic and Bernard Tomic already named for the January event, the Brisbane International is shaping up to be even bigger and better than ever before,“ Brisbane International Tournament Director Cameron Pearson announced today.
“Adding to this stellar line-up we are also keen to provide an even more exciting on-site experience for all with new initiatives in place for the 2012 Brisbane International that will make it the place to be this summer.”
Revealed today, 2012 will see the the introduction of Tennis Central, a new entertainment space that will house a mix of bars, merchandise outlets, sponsorship activations, live music performances and tennis on the big screen.
The 3000-square-metres of pure entertainment will include the Sirromet Wine Bar and Heineken Beer outlets, a host of live bands and performers, from an established name to up-and-comers on the Nova stage, and greater shade and a wider variety of areas to relax.
Nova 106.9, the Brisbane International’s new FM radio partner, will provide an outside broadcast from Tennis Central, Lexus plan to unveil the $750,000 V10 Lexus LFA in Tennis Central, their two-seat supercar and the Brisbane International’s official AM partner, 4BC, will be broadcasting their Sports Today program live each evening from 6 pm.
For 2012 the unsung heroes of the Brisbane International, the racquet stringers, have a new and very public position in Tennis Central as does the Brisbane International Shop where for the first time you can also buy Australian Open merchandise.
Kids Zone will return in 2012 with fun tennis activities, the rock climbing wall, face painting, colouring competitions, prizes and MLC Tennis Hot Shots and the inaugural Brisbane International Primary School Challenge will take place with the finalists playing during the January event.
Monday 2 January will also be Kids Tennis Day in 2012 with children aged between 3 and16 admitted free to the Queensland Tennis Centre.
“The Brisbane International has continued to build in momentum each year. With the upgraded WTA event in 2012, we recognised that we needed to reconfigure our space to ensure the best possible spectator experience,” Pearson said.
“The introduction of Tennis Central increases the footprint of the facilities, giving our fans an even greater opportunity to relax and enjoy the carnival atmosphere that is the Brisbane International.
“In 2012 we aim to have something for everyone – from the diehard tennis fans keen to snare a spot on a show court, young adults who enjoy the live entertainment and families who come for a great day out,” Pearson continued.
TransLink’s integrated public transport ticketing will again continue throughout the 2012 event allowing patrons to travel free on Queensland Rail and Brisbane Transport bus services.
Queensland Sport Minister Phil Reeves said the Bligh Government, through Events Queensland, is proud to support the Brisbane International after securing an international bid for a major upgrade to the tournament; confirming its status as one of the major tennis events on the world circuit.
“To have the world’s best tennis stars playing in the tournament in 2012 – when just last year the tennis centre was heavily impacted by floods – sends a strong message that Queensland is back in business and reinforces our status as a top sporting destination,” Mr Reeves said.
“Major events like the Brisbane International attract visitors from interstate and overseas, supporting the Queensland tourism industry and local economy, and is further proof that Queensland really is the Champions State, and the Events State as well.
“I’m sure with a line-up like this, people will now be tailoring their holiday plans to fit in with the tournament.”
