American teenage qualifier Ryan Harrison can at least be thankful there was no HECS bill for the tennis lesson handed out by top seed Robin Soderling at the Brisbane International on Tuesday night.
The big hitting Swede disposed of Harrison in just over an hour 6-2 6-4 on centre court at Pat Rafter Arena to set up a second-round showdown with German Michael Berrer.
Soderling needed just the one break point in the second set to open up a winning break and he finished the match off in style with a game to love and a stinging ace – his fourth for the match.
Harrison, 18, is still much in education mode on the tour, having made his debut in Brisbane after qualifying for the main draw.
Ranked 173 in the world, he battled gamely against the world No.5 who never got out of second gear and only did what was needed to get the job done.
As the match unfolded, there was never any prospect of an upset and Harrison will be richer, both in experience and financially, for having at least made the first round.
