Update 2:50 pm. Shahar Peer has moved safely into the second round with a 6-4 6-2 win over Australian wildcard recipient Sophie Ferguson.
Five double faults from Ferguson did not help the local’s cause as Peer moved Ferguson around the court with deep hitting to the corners.

Peer punished Ferguson’s second serve, with the Australian winning just nine of 24 second serves she landed.
Second-seeded Peer will now face Czech Lucie Safarova who won her first-round encounter with Akgul Amanmuradova in three sets, 6-3 3-6 6-2.
