Sweden could end up with two Brisbane International champions after Robert Lindstedt and Romanian Horia Tecau won through to the men’s doubles final today.
The men’s fourth seeds came from a set down to account for unseeded pair German Philipp Petzschner and Austrian Alexander Peya 4-6 6-3 [10-4].
Robin Soderling later made it two from two for the Swedes after his men’s singles semifinal win.
It was sweet revenge for Lindstedt and Tecau after losing to Petzschner and another Austrian, Jurgen Melzer, in last year’s Wimbledon final.
They will be bidding for their fifth title together as a team and will hope a leg injury for Lindstedt won’t prevent them taking to the court.
During the match tiebreak, serving at 2-1 down, the 33-year-old had to call for the physiotherapist.
“Yeah we’re waiting to see, it could be a slight tear,” Lindstedt said.
The pair had some luck at 3-3 in the match tiebreak, both times off Tecau’s racquet.
“Two points in a row – one hit the net [and dropped over for a winner off a low volley], then a framed return dropped on the line for a winner,” he said.
Finishing last year as the world’s 11th-ranked doubles pairing, Lindstedt said they had their eyes on a major title.
“We both thought we were too up and down last year, had great results, great wins, but too many first-round losses so we’ve been trying to figure out a way to get around that,” Lindstedt said.
“Having done that [reached a Grand Slam final) at Wimbledon, we know that when we play on top we can beat anyone so this is what we’re aiming for.”
Some tickets still remain for Sunday’s men’s final at Pat Rafter Arena. Tickets can be purchased online from Ticketek.
