Doubles semifinalists decided

6 January 2011, by Brisbane International Tennis

Today’s doubles quarterfinalists were forced to endure unseasonably chilly conditions and some now familiar rain delays as they fought for coveted semifinals spots.

After overcoming third seeds Olga Govortsova and Alla Kudryavtseva in an extremely tight first-round thriller, Polish duo Klaudia Jans and Alicja Rosolska continued their winning ways out on Show Court 1 with a 6-1 6-4 victory.

This time, however, the conclusion came much easier. The unseeded pair ripped through the opening set 6-1, helping them on their way was a clean 100 per cent strike rate on first serve points won.

With games staying on serve in the second, the rain found its way on the partially covered court to send the players back to the change room, with Govortsova and Kudryavtseva leading 2-1.

When play finally resumed it was Jans and Rosolska who took the second set, and the match, 6-4. They will now face second seeds Monica Niculescu and Zi Yan on Friday for a place in the final.

Over on Show Court 2 it was a similar story for Australian–Czech duo Paul Hanley and Lukas Dlouhy who ran out 6-4 7-6(3) winners. Seeded third here, the pair took the opening set against French–Slovak team Arnaud Clement and Michal Mertinak 6-4.

Early in the second set with Dlouhy and Hanley up a break and serving at 2-1, the rain halted proceedings. The second set stayed tight throughout, with Dlouhy and Hanley eventually saluting in a second-set tiebreak.

While Australia’s Paul Hanley had a good day on the court, the same can’t be said for the other two local pairings – Matt Ebden and Peter Luczak, and Carsten Ball and Chris Guccione.

After taking a break from his second-round win in the singles, Ebden with partner Luczak fronted up to take on fourth seeds Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau.

After losing the first set 6-3, the locals snatched the second in a tiebreak 7-6(2). In the deciding match tiebreak scores stayed close but eventually it was the fourth seeds who prevailed 13-11 to move into the semifinals

They will now face Philipp Petzschner and Alexander Peya who ousted Ball and Guccione in straight sets, 6-2 6-2.
