Twenty-year-old Queenslander Matheson Klein faces probably the biggest match of his career when he meets powerful Belgian and world number 94 Xavier Malisse in the second round of men’s qualifying at the Brisbane International tomorrow.
Klein was one of 10 Australian winners in qualifying matches today.
Big serving Sam Groth enjoyed his first match back from injury with a 6-3 6-4 win over Jarryd Chaplin.
Matt Reid proved too strong for Brisbane teenager Jason Kubler 6-3 6-0 while popular Melbourne veteran Joe Sirianni produced a rousing 4-6 7-5 7-6(2) win again Czech Lukas Dlouhy.
Other Australian winners included Joel Lindner, Nick Lindahl, Kaden Hensel, Greg Jones, Miles Armstrong and Matt Ebden while Brydan Klein and Marinko Matesevic had first round byes.
The four Australians in the second round of women’s qualifying all lost, Anastasia Rodionova and Jarmila Groth going down in three sets while Sally Peers and Olivia Rogowska lost in straight sets.
