Women’s finals day at Pat Rafter Arena and the final many hoped for is upon us – Kim Clijsters versus Justine Henin.
Apart from both hailing from Belgium the two grew up playing in representative teams together, they shared rooms together, trained together and both turned pro in the late 90s.
Both are former world No.1s, both have taken time out of the game and returned and both are Grand Slam tournament winners.
This week, Clijsters has dropped only one set in four matches and, no surprises here, Henin has done the same.
This match promises so much. On paper they are evenly matched. Will Clijsters’ earlier return give her a slight advantage? Or will Henin’s freshness give her an edge if the match goes to three? Only time will tell.
In the women’s doubles final, which will take place after the singles, Czech duo Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka will take on Hungary’s Melinda Czink and Arantxa Parra Santonja from Spain for the title.
In the men’s semis, the final four men are the top four seeds.
It will be a battle of the big servers when Andy Roddick, No.1, takes on tall Czech Tomas Berdych who is seeded fourth.
Roddick has been in devastating form all week and is yet to drop a set. Berdych had a tough quarterfinal against Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci, but if he plays the way he did in the second round against Marcos Baghdatis, Roddick will need to be at the top of his game.
In the second men’s semi, French third seed Gael Monfils will attempt to ease his body through yet another game, this time against defending champion and second seed, Radek Stepanek.
Monfils has had a tough time of it – all three of his matches have gone to three sets, while Stepanek’s defence has been relatively smooth.
In the men’s doubles semifinal, Americans Andy Roddick and James Blake team up to take on French pair Jeremy Chardy and Marc Gicquel.
The day session begins at at 11:00 am and at 7:00 pm for the night session. The women’s singles will be on first followed by the women’s doubles.
On Sunday, men’s final day, play begins at 2:00 pm, starting with the men’s doubles final, which will be followed by the men’s singles final.
