In the women’s doubles final Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka defeated Melinda Czink and Arantxa Parra Santonja 2-6 7-6(3) [10-4].
Czink, showing the form that helped her to the singles quarterfinals, and Parra Santonja, Spain, got off to flyer winning the opening set 6-2.
The second set was a more even affair, but the Czech pairing of Hlavackova and Hradecka got on top in the tiebreaker and forced the game to a match tiebreaker, which they won 10-4.
In the women’s singles final, the much-anticipated Belgian showdown between Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin did not disappoint with both taking the game to a whole new level.
Clijsters claimed the epic battle in three sets with the pair tussling it out for two hours and 23 minutes in a tight, close match.
In Henin’s first tournament back on the WTA Tour, she produced a fightback from one set and 4-1 down in the second to level the match at one set apiece.
The 26 year old then went ahead 3-0 in the third and had two match points at 4-5 before Clijsters come back and triumphed 6-3 4-6 7-6(6) with her fourth match point.
Earlier today in the men’s semifinals, No.1seed Andy Roddick defeated Tomas Berdych in three sets, 1-6 6-3 6-4.
He will meet No. 2 seed Radek Stepanek who made small work of Gael Monfils winning 6-2 6-1. Stepanek and Roddick will play Sunday in the Brisbane International men’s singles final.
Roddick was not so lucky in the doubles partnering James Blake later in the day. They lost to Frenchmen Jeremy Chardy and Marc Gicquel 6-4 3-6 [13-11].
Chardy and Gicquel will now play the No.1 seeds Lukas Dlouhy from the Czeck Republic and Leander Paes from India in tomorrow’s men’s double final first up at 2:00 pm.
