Slovakian-born Australian Jarmila Gajdosova is the first player through to the second round of the inaugural Brisbane International tennis tournament.
Melbourne-based Gajdosova, ranked 99th in the world, has overcome higher-ranked Chinese opponent Shuai Peng 6-4 6-2.
Her victory provides some joy for the local fans following a disappointing start for Australians.
Davis Cup players Chris Guccione and Carsten Ball were both bundled out of qualifying, as were Robert Smeets and Greg Jones, while Joe Sirianni and Sam Groth scored wins.
In other main draw matches completed so far, Richard Gasquet survived a three setter against countryman Marc Gicquel, winning 4-6 6-2 6-2. While women’s No.2 seed Victoria Azarenka knocked out Kateryna Bondarenko 6-0 6-2.
