Top seed Kim Clijsters swept into the second round of the Brisbane International with a 6-2 6-1 thrashing of Italian veteran Tathiana Garbin on Sunday.
The US Open champion was impressive as she kick-started the first women’s tournament of 2010 with victory in under an hour at Pat Rafter Arena.
Clijsters was rusty early, dropping her opening service game, but quickly found her range to win 10 of the last 11 games.
The match wasn’t without the odd embarrassing moment for the Belgian world No.18 as she missed two regulation smashes in the second set, including an air swing on one that left her red-faced.
Clijsters will play Australian wildcard Alicia Molik who survived a tough encounter with Russian youngster Ekaterina Makarova, who is ranked 60th in the world.
